Ear Lobe (Lobe)
Lobe piercing, i.e. classic earlobe piercing, is an absolute foundation in the world of body modification. For most of us, this is our first contact with piercing. Despite its popularity and apparent simplicity, Lobe still requires a professional approach, proper care and high-quality jewelry.
In this guide Piercing Planet We have collected all the most important information about earlobe piercing for you.
What is Lobe Piercing?
A lobe is a piercing of the soft, lower part of the ear (lobe) where there is no cartilage. Due to its anatomical structure, it is one of the least problematic and fastest-healing piercings. Currently, its variations are also extremely popular:
- Standard Lobe: Classic piercing in the center of the petal.
- Upper Lobe: The second, third and subsequent piercings are placed higher on the flap, just before the cartilage begins.
- Transverse Lobe: A horizontal piercing along the earlobe (without piercing it through from front to back).
Does a Lobe piercing hurt?
This is one of the most common questions asked in piercing studios. We have good news!
Due to the lack of cartilage and relatively few nerve endings, Lobe is considered the least painful of all piercings. On a scale of 1 to 10, pain is usually rated at 1 or 2. The treatment takes a fraction of a second and the discomfort resembles a slight pinch.
Important: Remember to always choose a professional studio where the piercer uses a sterile needle. Piercing your ears with a gun (common among beauticians) crushes the tissue, which prolongs the healing process and increases the risk of infection!
Lobe healing time and care
Earlobe healing is a relatively short and hassle-free process as long as you follow basic hygiene rules.
- Initial healing time: 6 to 8 weeks.
- Complete healing of the canal: up to 3 months.
How to care for a fresh piercing? (Principles of care)
- Don't touch: Avoid touching the earring with dirty hands and refrain from "spinning" it.
- Cleanse regularly: Wash the piercing site 2-3 times a day with sterile saline solution.
- Avoid chemicals: Avoid using hydrogen peroxide, alcohol or antibiotic ointment. They may irritate the wound and delay healing.
- Be careful with your hair and clothes: Make sure that shampoo or conditioner does not remain on the ear after bathing. Be careful when putting on sweaters!
What jewelry for Lobe piercing?
Choosing the right jewelry is the key to success. Depending on the stage of healing, you will need different piercings.
Starter jewelry (fresh piercing)
To begin with, the piercer always puts on longer jewelry to accommodate the natural swelling (swelling) of the ear that occurs after the procedure. The best choice is Labret made of surgical titanium (G23). Titanium is hypoallergenic, nickel-free and ideal for the healing process.
- Rod Thickness: Typically 1.2 mm.
- Starting rod length: 7 mm – 9 mm (selected individually by the piercer).
Jewelry after healing (downsize)
When the swelling goes down (usually after 3-4 weeks), you should return to the piercer for the so-called downsize, i.e. replacing the rod with a shorter one (e.g. 5 mm - 6 mm). Once the canal has completely healed, a whole world of styling opens up to you! You can wear rings, earrings, chains and richly decorated caps.

Lobe Piercing - Questions and Stories
When can I change my Lobe earring to a hoop?
When can I change my Lobe earring to a hoop?
A hoop earring (ring, clicker) can be put on only after the piercing canal has completely healed, which in the case of Lobe usually takes 2 to 3 months. Putting on the ring too early may cause the earring to migrate and cause granulation tissue to form.
Can I pierce Lobe with a gun at a beautician?
Can I pierce Lobe with a gun at a beautician?
We strongly advise against it. Guns cannot be fully sterilized in an autoclave, and the procedure itself involves tearing the tissue with a blunt piercing, which is more painful and causes more difficult healing than using a sterile, sharp needle in a professional piercing studio.
What should the first Lobe earring be made of?
What should the first Lobe earring be made of?
The first earring should be made of G23 surgical titanium. It is a safe, light and 100% hypoallergenic material, which minimizes the risk of nickel allergy, which often occurs with surgical steel.
I have a lump near my earring - what is it?
I have a lump near my earring - what is it?
A small "lump" is most often granulation tissue, which is caused by mechanical irritation (e.g. sleeping on the ear, getting caught in clothes) or a wrong angle of the piercing. Don't squeeze it! Consult your piercer and follow appropriate saline care.
