Gun or Needle? Why NOT get your ears pierced at a beautician?

Many people begin their piercing journey at a beauty salon or jeweler. We hear the distinctive sound of the gun, feel the sting, and it's done. It seems quick, inexpensive, and less intimidating than the sight of a needle. However, in the world of professional piercing, using a gun is considered malpractice. The difference between a gun and a needle is the difference between ripping flesh and precise surgery.

Here are 4 reasons why you should steer clear of pistols

1. Blunt Impact vs. Surgical Incision

This is the most important argument. The way the tool penetrates the skin determines how long and how easily your piercing will heal.

🔍 Gun vs. Needle - How Does It Really Work?

Gun: This uses the stud itself, which has a blunt tip, to pierce. It applies considerable force, crushing and tearing the tissue to force the jewelry through. This is called blunt force trauma . It causes increased swelling, pain, and the risk of cartilage deformation – therefore, a gun should absolutely not be used for piercing the nose or upper ear.

The needle: It is sharp like a scalpel and hollow (cannula type). It doesn't tear the skin, but precisely cuts it, creating a perfect channel for the piercing. The tissue heals faster, and paradoxically, the pain is less because the procedure is so quick and smooth.

2. The problem of sterility

A piercing gun is a reusable tool, typically made of plastic and metal. And that's where the problem begins.

⚠️ Health Warning

Plastic can't be put in an autoclave because it would melt. Wiping the gun with an alcohol wipe doesn't kill blood-borne viruses (like hepatitis B or C). When fired, microscopic particles of the previous user's blood are released into the air and may settle on the device.

The piercing needle, however, is sterile, disposable, and opened in front of you. After the procedure, it goes straight into the medical waste bin. The risk of infection is zero.

3. The myth of the "healing earring" and the "butterfly" clasp

Piercings inserted with a gun are usually so-called "medicinal" studs. They have two huge drawbacks that are rarely discussed:

Problem Why is this dangerous? Professional solution
Butterfly clasp It fits tightly around the ear, preventing airflow and wound cleansing. Lymph, blood, and dirt accumulate there—a prime candidate for infection. Labret with a flat foot - easy to clean, does not press on the ear.
Rod too short A fresh piercing always swells. When the ear swells, the "butterfly" can become embedded in the flesh, causing pain and requiring surgical intervention. Labret of the appropriate length - with room for swelling.

4. Material matters

Pistol earrings are often made of low-quality metal alloys, pompously called "surgical steel" (which often contains nickel), or are merely gold-plated.

✅ Professional standard: Titanium G23

A professional piercer will place a sterile G23 Titanium (Implant Grade Titanium) stud. This material is fully biocompatible, non-allergenic, and actively promotes healing. It's the same material used in medical implants.

Summary: Choose wisely

The time and cost savings of a piercing gun are illusory. The longer healing time, risk of granulation tissue, and infection are a price not worth paying. If you're dreaming of a new piercing, go to a professional piercing studio.

✅ Remember the key rules:
  • The needle cuts precisely - the gun tears the tissue with force
  • The plastic gun cannot be sterilized in an autoclave.
  • The "butterfly" is a breeding ground for bacteria - the labret is a safe alternative
  • "Surgical steel" often contains nickel - choose Tytan G23
  • You absolutely must not pierce your nose or ear cartilage with a gun.
  • Professional studio = needle, autoclave and implant jewelry
